Condensers. - In order to reduce the stresses due to the corners and edges of plates, the latter are made substantially circular and their edges are rounded off with a radius which is appreciably greater than the dielectric thickness, thus enabling the latter to be kept at a minimum. Each plate 1 comprises two discs 2, 3 of zinc with their edges turned over at a, b and soldered together. The discs are fitted one on each side of a thick wooden disc 4 with a semicircular edge d, and a mica disc 5 is placed between each pair of plates. Alternatively, an annular air-gap may be found in each plate of one pole between the flat portion and the rounded portion, the latter constituting a guard-ring. Where one pole is earthed, this arrangement may be applied to the earthed pole. The plates may, alternatively, be a thin conducting coating over an insulating body of the requisite shape.
