322,717. Herbert, Sir A., and Milburn, J. April 24, 1929. Turning.-In a capstan lathe having a crossslide saddle mounted on guards 12, 12<1> which protect the guides 11, 11<1> from cuttings, and a longitudinal slide 15 carrying a tool-turret 13, the transverse shaft 18 for traversing the slide 15 is mounted in a housing 17 which is cut away at 20 to clear the guard 12. The headstock is made narrow at the base to clear the guards and the latter are made a close fit on the guides, as described in Specification 136,347.
