[Class 83 (iii)] Catching and removing cuttings.-Saddles or slide rests of lathes, screwing-machines &c. slide on ways a<SP>3</SP>, a<SP>4</SP>, a<SP>5</SP>, the last being an adjustable gib, by marginal portions b connected by depending parts b<SP>3</SP> of a base b<SP>2</SP> on which is mounted the saddle C carrying, for example, the vice of a screwing-machine. The ways are protected from swarf by strips D secured at d to the upstanding parts a<SP>2</SP> of the bed and extending across the parts b, which they contact for holding down purposes, so that flanges d<SP>1</SP> depend with clearance into the grooves formed between the parts b<SP>3</SP> and the saddle C. Movement of the slide towards the ends of the ways is limited by stop blocks E, Fig. 3.
