Energy-absorbing elements.-Insoluble infusible materials are prepared by heating polymerized vinyl alcohol (polyvinyl alcohol) or an ester or ether thereof to temperature of at least 100‹ C. in presence or absence of a catalyst. In the absence of a catalyst, temperatures of about 200‹ C. should be employed, but the temperature is lowered by the addition of such bodies as hydrochloric acid, lactic acid, acetic acid, zinc chloride, aluminium chloride or formaldehyde. Paper sheets and webs may be soaked with a solution of the starting material, the sheets then being pasted together and hardened at a temperature above 100‹ C. to form a material suitable for the manufacture of brake bands. Examples are given of the treatment of polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl acetate and the benzyl ether of polyvinyl alcohol.
