Abstract
Partly hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate, having a polyvinyl acetate content of between 20 and 50 per cent, is made by the action at p 25 DEG C. of sodium hydroxide on a solution of polyvinyl acetate containing 2 per cent water in a mixture of methyl alcohol and methyl acetate. The gel formed is broken up by stirring and the pulverised gel extruded through a perforated plate and dried in warm air. Layers of flexible sheet material may be adhered by coating at least one of the layers with an aqueous solution of the product which may also contain a plasticizer such as glycerol, mono- or di-acetin, or diethanolamine, juxtaposing the layers in the dry state, and applying heat and pressure.
