Abstract

776,908. Catamenial tampons. SANITARY PRODUCTS CORPORATION. July 4, 1955, No. 19329/55. Class 81(2) The tip of a tampon is provided with a cap of prefabricated pliable material, such as a film, bonded to it. The film must be soluble in body fluids and suitable materials are methyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose sodium cellulose sulphate, carboxymethyl cellulose and polyvinyl alcohol. In a machine for applying the tip a strip of film F is gripped between members 10, 11, which are heated to make the film pliable, and the tampon T is driven downwards against the film to stretch it tightly over the tip. At the same time an annular cutter 15 moves upward to cut the film closely around the tampon and this' continues to move downward through tube 23 so that the film is pressed into close contact with it. The applied heat causes the film to adhere to the tampon material but, if desired, an adhesive coating may be applied to the tampon before the film is attached. The film preferably incorporates a plasticizer such as glycerine, sorbitol, polyethylene glycol or higher alcohol derivatives.
