Abstract
1,000,022. Surgical swabs. JOHNSON & JOHNSON. Jan. 23,1964 [Jan. 18, 1963], No. 2418/63. Heading A5R. A surgical swab for applying medicaments, or for taking specimens, comprises a protective sheath mounted on a shank and arranged so that it can be retracted to expose an end of the shank or moved forward to enclose the end. In the preferred form a rod 1, of wood, metal, glass, plastic or paper; has an absorbent wad 2 secured to one end by an adhesive and carries a conical sheath 3 which may be slid along the rod from the position shown to a position in which it surrounds the wad 2. The sheath is preferably made from a relatively stiff sheet of material, such as polyethylene, so as to avoid being inadvertently pressed against the tip 2. It is proposed that the device should be supplied sterilised in a sealed enclosure made from heat-sealed polythene film tubing and, after use, it may be returned to this enclosure for transit.
