Abstract

Turning.gear.-In a starter drive comprising a driving member such as a pinion 7 movable longitudinally on and rotatable with a shaft 3, which is movable axially to bring the member 7 into engagement with an engine member 29, a positioning device 15 places the member 7 in forward position on the shaft 3 when the latter is retracted, but leaves it entirely free when the shaft is advanced into the starting position. As shown, the pinion 7 is threaded to engage screwthreads on the shaft 3, which slides on the splined shaft 2 of the electric motor 1. The shaft 3 is moved axially by means of a shifter arm 19 sliding on a shaft 12 and connected to a foot-operated plunger 22, which carries an adjustable screw 26 for engaging a switch 27 for the motor. The positioning device 15 is fixed on the shaft 20 and its arms 17 carry rollers 18 projecting into the path of the disc 8 of the pinion 7.
