Vices.-The half nut 2 of a releasable nut vice is mounted in a recess in the base 4 of the fixed jaw 6 and held normally in engagement with the buttress threaded vice screw 1 mounted in the slide 8 by a spring 3. A ratchet wheel 16 mounted loosely on the rear end of the screw 1 coacts with rack teeth on the rear end of a longitudinally arranged bar 20 pivoted at 19 in such way that counter-clockwise rotation of the screw first releases the grip and then rotates the ratchet wheel 16 through a lost motion device in the form of a projection 18 on the screw engaging a projection on the ratchet wheel, the rotation of the latter depressing the rack end of the bar 20 which presses the half nut out of engagement with the screw.
