Limbs, artificial.-Parts of artificial limbs subjected to torsional stresses are adjustably locked in position by forming on the parts interengaging serrations, grooves, notches, &c. The spindle 25 of an ankle or knee joint has at its ends serrations 27 which engage serrations 30 on side members 28 and is adjustably held in position by screws 31 passing through elongated holes in the members 28; or the spindle may have therein an oval or circular bore through which a bolt passes to lock the parts. As applied to a check cord construction, Fig. 8, wherein the cord passes around a grooved member 37, this member has serrations 39 on its ends and an enlarged or slotted bore to receive a screw 43, serrations 42 being formed on the parts 40 41 of the limb; or the member 37 may have integral extending screwed spindles. Fig. 15 shows an ankle joint, the serrated ends of the spindle 54 being formed with slots 56, and the serrated bosses 50 on the limb having slots 53, so that the spindle can be inserted as shown in Fig. 16 and moved sideways into position. Fig. 11 shows a construction wherein the parts are held in either of two positions by an eccentrically placed screw 48.
