Stencils.-A device holding a stencil sheet in firm contact with a writing plate while the stencil is being cut by means of a wheel pen or a stylus comprises a substantially rigid window-like frame adapted to hold the peripheral edges of the sheet against the plate. The frame is preferably covered on its under surface with a non-slipping material, such as rubberized cotton or linen. As shown, a stencil 2 is clamped against a metal writing plate 4 by means of a metal, celluloid, or cardboard frame 1 of the same outside dimensions as the stencil 2 and having an aperture 3 of the same size as the writing surface of the stencil. The clamping pressure is provided by spring clips 5, 6, one end of each of which may be hinged to the frame, or, alternatively, by hinges, the length of the frame provided with over-centre springs forcing the hinges into either the open or the closed position. The frame may be also hinged to the plate 4 and forced by a spring into the closed position, where it is secured by a catch. The frame may be marked with scales, and a ruler or other writing or drawing aid may be associated with the frame, e.g., a ruler may be held by a spring clip slidable along the clip 5, the ruler extending across the stencil.
