WIYEGAND HEM 'HOLDER'LAND MARKER Filed Sept. 22, 1925 ymz% Patented July 20, 192.6.
UNITE sitar CHARLOTTE WIEGAND, FORT WILLIAIVI, ONTARIO, CANADA. j
HEM HOLDER AND MARKER.
Application filed. September 22, 1925, Serial No. 57,951, and in Canada September 16, 1925..
This invention relates to hem holders and markers and the objects of the invent-ion are to provide a combination instrument, for holding and marking the cloth, of simple construction that can be manufactured and placed on the market at a reasonable price, while being so constructed as to more cfficiently perform the functions required of it.
Further objects are the provision of a tool or instrument of this description comprising a holder as well .as a marker to hold cloth in position after marking and to prevent the cloth or the like running to a corner thus making it difiicult to put a neat hem thereon.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists essentially of a frame formed from a single strip of metal bent on itself having in the top an adjust- .able marking .and measuring means and underneath thereof a holding or clamping means.
Referring now to the drawings, in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure:
Figure l is a perspective view of my combined holder and marker;
Figure 2 is a plan view showing the device in engagement with the piece of cloth, and
Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, A designates the device as a whole, comprising a strip of metal of aluminium or the like, bent on itself to form a frame, closed at one end as at 10 and having top and bottom sides 11, 12, the opposite end to the end 10 being opened. In the side 11 is formed a slot or keyway 13 in connection with which is the measuring cloth marker and in which is adapted to slide a contact member 14 provided with an adj u-sting screw 15 extending through the slot 13. Adjacent the end of the top 11 is a chalk-holder 16 comprising a sleeve member 17 and retaining screw 18. Suitable marking means such as a piece of chalk 19 is adapted to be inserted in the sleeve 17 and extend downwardly below the top 11 .and to be adjusted and retained in position by the screw 18. Riveted at 20 on the inside 12 of the frame is an intermediate strip of suitable metal 21 between which and the upper side 11 as illustrated in Figure 2, the cloth to be marked is fitted. To retain the cloth after the contact member 12 has been set to the extent to which it is to be marked, I provide a clamping-device 22 in the lower side 12 designed to engage with the underside of the strip 21 to move it upwardly and thus clamp the cloth.
From the foregoing the operation of my device will be almost apparent. The cloth to be hemmed and marked accordingly is placed between the strip 21 and the top of the frame 11 and the point at which it is to be marked being measured by the member 14, the latter being fixedly adjusted, the instrument is drawn along the cloth marking it, as indicated in Figure 2.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention, within the scope of the claims, constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What I claim as my invention is 1. A combined holder and marker com prising a strip of suitable metal bent on itself to form a frame, .and having a slot in the upper side thereof, a contact member slidably mounted in said slot, an adjustable chalk-holder adjacent the slot, a second strip of suitable metal rigidly secured at one end to the underside of the frame, a clamping screw in the upper side and a clamping screw in the underside adapted to contact with and adjust said second strip.
2. A device of the character described comprising a single strip of suit-able metal bent on itself to form top and bottom sides in spaced relationship to one another, a slidably mounted contact member and an adjustable chalk-holder in the top side, clamping means in the underside and a clamping strip intermediate of said sides adapted to be operated by the clamping screw.
3. In a device of the character described and in combination with an upper plate have ing a slidable contact and adjustable marker therein, of a second plate parallel therewith and a resilient intermediate plate rigidly mounted between the aforementioned plates and means in the second plate for raising and lowering the intermediate plate.
4. A device of the character described comprising an upper plate and a lower plate rigidly connected to one another at one end and an intermediate plate adjustably mounted therebetween and means for adjusting the intermediate plate.
5. The combination with a plate provided with a slidable contact member and marker, of a second rigid plate integral therewith and spaced therefrom and an intermediate adjustable plate and means for adjusting the intermediate plate. 10 In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand CHARLOTTE VVIEGAND.
