LETTERING GUIDE on THE LIKE l Filed April 29, 1938 4 l' CN TQR ATTORNEYl Patented Apr. 4, 1939 STATES FATENT OFFlCE 4 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in guide means for forming letters, characters or the like on work sheets.
An object of my invention is to provide improved guide means for use in forming characters, lettering or the like on Work sheets.
Another object of my invention is to provide an improved template holder which is adapted for use with drawing boards to adjustably support a lettering guide in suitable positions above a work sheet, whereby letters, characters or th-e like of uniform shape and appearance may be conveniently formed.
A further object of my invention is to provide an improved guide which is particularly useful in preparing musical scores or the like.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described which may be shifted to different positions without danger of smudging previously prepared lines of characters.
Further objects of my invention will present themselves or will be speciiic-ally pointed out in the description of my invention which is to follow.
In the accompanying drawing:
Fig. l is a top plan view of a device embodying the preferred form of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. i;
I'lig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. l; and
Fig. 4 is a side view of the device.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral I designates a drawing or work board which is adapted to support a work sheet 2. Extending over the opposite side edges of the drawing board are slidable frame members 3 and 4 which are substantially U-shaped in cross section. Rigidly secured as by pins 5 or other suitable means to the lower ends of the frame members 3 and 4 is a transversely disposed bar E, the underneath side of which is arched and normally positioned Well above the work sheet 2. The bar 6 is provided at its upper edge with a longitudinally disposed slot E which is adapted to receive an edge of a tem.-
plate l or other suitable lettering guide. The transversely disposed bar 'u is preferably positioned at right angles with respect to the frame members 3 and li. Secured as by a screw 8 to the so inner side of the frame member 3 is a spring 9 which frictionally engages with a side edge of the work board i, thereby adjustably maintaining the device in a suitable position with respect to the work sheet 2.
55 The frame members 3 and 4 are provided with vertical longitudinal slots 3 and 4' which slidably accommodate threaded buttons 3a and 4a, which are engaged respectively by thumb screws 3b and lib. The threaded buttons 3a and 4a. extend through and carry a transversely disposed bar l0 5 which is longitudinally slotted at its downwardly disposed edge as at lll. The bar Ill, similarly to the bar (i, is also -arched at its underneath side so as to prevent the smudging of wet ink in the event the device is moved up or down with respect 10 to the work sheet and the work board.
In ordinary practice the template l or other suitable guide means having suitable apertures 'l' therein, is positioned between the transversely disposed members S and Iii with its upper and lower 15 edges slidably located in the slots 6 and lll of said members. The thumb screws 3b and lb when suitably manipulated will secure the transversely disposed bar lil in a position whereby the template may slide transversely back and forth, but 20 still be retained in an adjustable position above the work sheet 2.
The bar Ill being adjustable by means of the thumb screws 3b and 4b with respect to the bar 6 permits the device to be used with templates or 25 guide members of different dimensions. The transverse bar S is preferably provided with a knob i i which permits the vertical adjustment of the device on the work board.
' Having described my invention, what I claim is: 3o
1. In guide means of the kind described, frame members adapted to slidably engage the opposite side edges of a work board, and a pair of normally spaced bars secured to the frame members and adapted to extend transversely across the 35 work board, the said bars being normally spaced from the work board on which it is mounted, and the said frame members having means at their adjacent side edges for adjustably holding a lettering guide member. 40
2. In guide means of the kind described, a pair of frame members adapted to slidably engage the opposite side edges of a work board, and a pair of normally spaced bars secured to the frame members and adapted to extend across the work 45 board, the said frame members having means at their adjacent side edges for slidably holding a lettering or similar guide member, the said bars being adjustable with respect to one another, whereby guide members of diierent dimensions may be slidably retained by the bars in operative positions above the work board.
3. In guide means of the kind described, a pair of frame members adapted to slidably engage with opposite side edges of a work board; spring 5 of frame members adapted to adjustably engage with opposite side edges of a Work board; spring means carried by one of the frame members for engaging with the work board; a bar rigidly se-' cured to the frame members and adapted to extend transversely across the work board, a second bar adjustably secured to the frame members and also adapted to extend across the Work board, and means at the adjacent side edges of the bars adapted to adjustably hold a lettering or similar 10 guide member.
