(Cl. 33-80) This invention has reference to a fixture or layout board used in the graphic arts for setting dummy forms for photo-offset reproduction of editorials, advertising layouts, and the like.
The layout problem for editorial galleys, illustrations, advertising copy, displays, type, and other similar works, is one requiring, as it is well known, accurate alignment of paper clippings bearing these written and graphic subject matters in relation to each other onto a paper backing sheet, and in proper location relative to the edges of such sheet placed onto a supporting board.
The method heretofore practised by editors in connection with such layout necessitates the manipulation of a multiplicity of equipments simultaneously in the placing of the adhesive coated paper clippings at right angles and in spaced relation to each other, and a predetermined location onto the paper backing sheet while constantly holding the latter in a definite set position on the surface of the board. One of the drawbacks in the use of such method is the fact that the accidental misplacing of one of the numerous paper clippings which are required in the filling of the backing sheet necessitates the removal of such misplaced clipping, 'which removal often results in the damaging of the completed or partially completed backing sheet with the consequent replacement of all the paper clippings previously adhesively positioned onto the backing sheet.
The object of the present invention is the provision of a fixture for use in combination with a minimum number of cooperating elements in the preparation of editorial layout, which fixture will be cheap to manufacture, convenient in use, and which will to a high degree facilitate the accurate locating of the adhesive coated paper clippings over the paper backing sheet used in such layout, which will facilitate the accurate positioning and holding of the backing sheet in adjusted position onto the fixture, and which will facilitate the placing and removal of such sheet from the base plate of the fixture following the positioning operation of the paper clippings thereon, the cooperating implements defining reversible straight edges marked on both flat sides thereof for assisting in the positioning of the paper clippings which may form part of the layout in relation with such marks which may indicate picas or inches, as the case requires, the straight edge being formed with means at its ends cooperating with guiding rim members carried by the base plate of the fixture whereby such straight edge may be moved to any point lengthwise and transversely along such guiding rims, depending upon the size, shape and character of the subject matter printed onto the adhesive coated paper clippings to be glued onto the backing paper sheet.
Other novel features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description and by the claims appended thereto, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which:
FIG. 1 is a plan view of the fixture of the invention showing the spring-pressed clamping plate and a passageway for the fingers, the latter afifording means for facilitating the placing and the removing of the backing paper sheet from the base plate of the fixture following the manual operation of the clamping plate;
FIG. 2 is a side view, partly in section, taken on line 2-2 of FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is a sectional View taken on line 3-3 of FIG. 1;
FIG. 4 is a plan view of a modification of FIG. 1, shown with portions broken away;
FIG. 5 is an end view shown partly in section taken on line 5-5 of FIG. 4;
FIG. 6 is a plan view of a straight edge showing line marks serving for assisting in the positioning of the adhesive coated paper clippings over the backing paper sheet;
FIG. 7 is another plan view of FIG. 1 reduced, show ing a number of paper clippings in phantom lines in position relative to each other effected by the use of the triangle shown in FIG. 9 and the rim members of the fixture, the paper sheet being shown located onto the base plate in registering relation with two adjacently disposed rim members of the fixture;
FIG. 8 is another plan view of FIG. 4 reduced, shown with portion broken awa, also showing the marked straight edge in position for assisting in locating paper clippings on the paper backing sheet; and
FIG. 9 is a plan view of the marked triangle used in combination with the guiding rims of the fixture, as in FIG. 7, and with the. straight edge formed with the clamping plate for assisting in accurately positioning the paper clippings on the backing sheet.
The fixture of the present invention as shown in the several views of the drawing, consists of a rectangularlyshaped base plate 15, FIGS. 1 and 7, and in a modification in FIGS. 4 and 8. The base plate is constructed of a plastic or fibrous material having rim members 16 and 17, FIGS. 1 and 7, formed at right angles to each other on two adjacent sides of the base plate 15. The rim members 16 and 17, as best seen in FIGS. 2 and 3, extend perpendicularly a small distance from the surface of the base plate to serve as guides for facilitating the operation of the fixture in readily and accurately positioning a paper sheet PS, FIG. 7, onto the base plate, such paper sheet serving as a backing support for paper clippings bearing the different displays or types.
To one end of base late 15 is secured, as by means of a number of screws 1%, the brackets 19 and 20, FIG. 1, serving for supporting a rod 21 on which is pivotally mounted an oblong-shaped plate 22 having a longitudinal edge 23 normally bearing against the base plate 15 by the tension of a coiled spring 24 mounted concentric onto the rod 21, this spring having one of its ends engaging the underside of the plate 22, and its other end the edge of the base plate 15, as shown in FIGS. 1, 2, and 4. The base plate 15 is provided along the rim portions 16 and 17 with grooves 16x and 17x so as to permit the similarly disposed edges of paper sheet PS, above mentioned, to rest fiatwise onto the base plate, while to the under surface of the latter are formed longitudinally and transversely disposed rib members 25 and 26 serving to reenforce the base plate in addition to bosses 23-29 and Sit-31 having drilled holes screw-threaded for receiving similar rubber pads 33 on which the base plate 15 may rest, as on a desk or table as the case may be, the boss 31 being provided with a bushing 32 engaged by the pad screw which protrudes through the base plate for adjustment of the fixture as to the unevenness of the surface on which the fixture may rest.
A recess 27, FIGS. 1, 4, 5, 7 and 8, which has the form of a quarter section of a sphere, is cast into the plastic base plate 15 at the top surface thereof, which recess includes a relatively small length of rim member 17 forming a passageway for facilitating the gripping of the backing sheet by the fingers for placing and or removing the latter from the base plate following the completion in the placing of the adhesive paper clippings as P, P1, P2, P3 shown in FIG. 7, and P4, P5, P6 and P7 shown in FIG. 8.

said base plate having means molded therein forming a recess in the shape of a quarter section of a sphere where 'by the backing sheet may'be gripped by the fingers for placing and removing such sheet from said base plate.
