Facilitating writing.-An appliance for facilitating writing by the blind comprises a rectangular frame provided with a cross-piece which is attached at its ends to U-shaped travellers 6 embracing the edges of the longitudinal sides 1 of the frame and arranged to be independently adjustable thereon, springs 12 being provided on the travellers to co-operate with equally spaced notches 11 on the sides for holding the travellers in a set position. Each end of the cross-piece 7 is provided with an adjustable finger touch 8 to indicate the proximity of the writer's hand to the sides of the paper, means such as clamping screws 14 being provided to hold the outer ends of the finger touches within slotted bridge pieces 13 on the travellers 6. The inner ends of the finger touches are provided with claws 9 bearing against the edge of the cross-piece, which is graduated to facilitate the setting of the finger touches. The paper to be written upon is placed on a flat tablet 4 which is supported on webs at the inner corners of the frame. The correct alignment of the paper is assisted by a stop or stops disposed on the inner edge of the upper transverse side 2 of the frame, beneath a spring clamp 15 which holds the paper in position. Stops on the underside of the frame near the upper edge provide means for ensuring that the cross-piece 7 is initially horizontal, from which position it may be set by noting the audible clicks as the upper ends of the springs 12 move over the notches 11 in the sides. The frame may be modified by providing a permanent interior face for supporting the paper.
