Abstract
319,879. Fromhein, A. Aug. 10, 1928. Liquid-fuel furnaces.-Apparatus for regulating the supply of liquid fuel and air to steam-boiler furnaces or furnaces for generating combustion products under pressure for power purposes comprises a piston 2 which in the case of a steam-boiler furnace is subjected to the varying pressure in the boiler through a pipe 3 and is adapted by the rod 8 and abutment 2<b> to actuate the fuel-supply valves of the burners and by the cross bar 9 the valves 9<a> and 9<b> of fuel and air supply apparatus. Upon a decrease of load on the engine 29 the pressure in the boiler 27 rises and actuates through a pipe 17 and piston 11 a valve 13 in the exhaust pipe 13<a> of the cylinder 1. Simultaneously the governor 6 closes the valve 4 in the steam supply pipe 3 and the piston 2 moves to the right under the action of a spring and closes the fuel and air supply valves. The movement of the piston 2 is controlled by a dashpot cylinder 8<c> having its ends in communication through pipes 14<c> controlled by valves 8d, 14<a>. Should it be necessary to close suddenly the fuel supply valves upon an increase of speed of the engine, the governor 6 actuates through a rod 5<c>, provided with a lug 5f, the stop valve 7a and also through a catch 26 a valve 14 in the pipe 3 and the valve 14a in the pipe 14<c>. The damping action of the cylinder 8<c> is thus reduced and the cylinder 1 is opened to exhaust allowing quick movement of the rod 8 for permitting closure of the air and fuel supply valves. A modification is described wherein the piston 2 is subjected to the pressure of furnace combustion gases for driving a turbine. Where the boiler supplies several steam using appliances and it is not possible to use a governor such as 6, the steam supply pipe may be provided with a loaded flap 21, Fig. 2, adapted to actuate the valve 4 in accordance with steam pressure changes.
