Yarns, brushing, polishing, &c. - Yarns are brushed, polished or otherwise treated while extending freely between two parallel drums 1, 2, Fig. 2, the yarn being unwound from spools 5 and brushed by rotating brushes 6, 7. The brushes rotate in the same direction as the passing yarn and are driven slowly or more quickly according as the yarns run with necessary brushing speed or run slowly. In treating a group of yarns the single yarns are separated by a comb device. Alternatively a single yarn may be wound a number of times round two drums, 16, 17, Figs. 3 and 4, to present a number of parallel lengths of yarn to the brushes 42. The axes of the drums 16, 17 are horizontal, but not parallel to one another, so that the yarn is automatically displaced along the drums when running. The yarn passes from a spool 19 round a tension device comprising two non-parallel shafts 20, 21, the lower of which is braked at 23, over a roller 22 to the drums 16, 17 and thence round a regulating device comprising two non-parallel drums 25, 26, Fig. 5, to the winding-spindle. The yarn is drawn over the edge of a guide member 28 through an eye 29 mounted on a friction clutch on a shaft 30, the yarn accumulating on the drums 25, 26 or being wound therefrom according as the the winding-spindle is driven more slowly or faster than the treating device. The accumulation of too many turns on the drums 25, 26 is prevented by a lever 32 arranged between the drums and adapted to control the drive of the winding spindle. The yarn is initially treated by brushes 45, 46, 47, the brush 45 being moistened by water or steam, the brush 46 containing paraffin, and the brush 47 serving as a distributor. The yarn is dried by warm air drawn by a fan 15 through a heater 14 while clearing-drums 50 are pressed elastically against the drums 16, 17 at the point where the yarns are first wound. Each of the three pairs of drums over which the yarn passes is arranged in the same manner, so that the yarn is automatically traversed along the drums.
