Abstract

324,896. Ashworth, P. Nov. 1, 1928. Yarns, warping and beaming.-A yarn-sizing machine particularly for artificial silk yarn coinprises a creel carrying the bobbins from which the yarn is unwound, a sizing trough in which a rotating roller applies size to the yarn, a heated drying chamber through which the yarn passes but in which the yarn does not come into contact with steam, a weighted faller roller suspended on the yarn after it leaves the drying cylinder to control the tension thereof, and a section beam or roller on to which the yarn is wound. The yarn is drawn from bobbins a, Fig. 1, carried on a creel A, and passes through porcelain eyes in a board B, each thread passing through a separate eye. A pair of driven rollers C, C<1> draw the yarn from the bobbins and deliver it to the sizing roller D, which is driven and runs in a sizetrough heated by a second trough D<2> containing hot water heated by a steam pipe. A doctor is provided pressing against the roller D. Reeds d<1>, d<2> are provided on each side of the sizing roller to separate the threads, and a bar d carried on arms d<3> controlled by a rack and pinion is provided to lift the yarn from the sizing roller when the machine is stopped. The drying chamber E is heated by steam pipes e, Fig. 3, or radiators. Rollers E<1> support the yarn passing through the chamber. The cover of the chamber is preferably made in sections, each suspended by counter-weighted cords. A second pair of driven rollers F, F<1> is provided at the outlet end of the chamber, so geared that they can be run either faster or slower than the rollers C, C<1>. A jockey pulley f carried in a slot in one end of the lever F<2>, the other end of which carries a sliding weight f<1>, Fig. 1, applies tension to the yarn after leaving the rollers F, F'. The section G, Fig. 3, on which the yarn is wound is removably mounted on a shaft G<1>, and the yarn passes thereto from the jockey pulley f over a roller f<2>, through a reed or comb f<3> and over a measuring roller G<2>. The width of the laver of yarn is narrowed to the width of the section as it passes through the machine by means of the various reeds, the teeth of which are closer in succession. The driven parts of the machine are actuated from the main driving pulley H, Fig. 1, which is connected to the shaft H<1> by a friction clutch to allow slip on starting up. One pulley h<1>, Fig. 2, of a pair of cone puleys h<1>, h<2> is mounted on the shaft H<1> and drives the second pulley h<2> through a belt h<3> the position of which can be regulated by a fork h<4> mounted on a screwed rod so as to be movable by means of a hand-wheel H<2>. The cone pulley h<2> is secured to a shaft j which drives the shaft G<1> of the section G through bevel gears j<1> and friction gearing j<2>, J, the ratio of which is varied as the. yarn fills the section by means of a lever K, Fig. 1, the forked end of which engages a collar on the friction wheel j<2>. The lever K is actuated in turn bv a bell-crank lever K<1> which carries a roller k<2> at the end of one arm bearing on the yarn on the section. The shaft j also drives a shaft M, Fig. 2, through bevel gears m. This shaft drives the rollers F and C through bevel gears, change wheels m<3> being preferably provided in the drive roller C. 'The clutch h on the main driving shaft is controlled by a handle N, Fig. 1, and also by a number of handles N<1> - - N<4>, Fig. 2. To enable the section G to be stopped, without stopping the rest of the machine and the jockey pulley f to adjust itself should small irregularities in tension occur, the friction wheel j<2> can be brought out of engagement with the disc J by means of a lever o<1> which shifts the shaft j<4>. When the machine is stopped, the rollers C<1> and F<1> are lifted by inclined projections n<5>, Fig. 1, on the starting handles N<1> - - N<4>, which lift the shafts of the rollers when the handles are in the stop position.
