Abstract
439,194. Polishing cords &c. FAIRBAIRN LAWSON COMBE BARBOUR, Ltd., and ANDERSON, J. K., Wellington Foundry, Leeds. June 1, 1934, No. 16324. [Class 109] [See also Group IX] In a machine for polishing yarns, cords, &c. of fibrous substances having rollers and cylindrical guiding bars over the surfaces of which the yarns &c. pass in spiral or sinuous paths to be subjected to heating and rubbing treatments, the main polishing roller is driven by the yarn and is provided with a brake mechanism so arranged and actuated that the brake is off when the machine is started and is gradually actuated to retard the motion of the roller as the machine speeds up. As shown, the yarn a passes over a hollow heated roller c, over a roller d revolving in a bath f containing sizing and other polishing substances, under a rod or bar g, over the main polishing roller h, between guiding pins o, over a guiding roller p, beneath the rollers h, c and thence forwards and backwards over the rollers &c. a number of times and finally to the bobbin b<2> upon which it is wound up. The polishing roller h is provided with a brake drum y<5> embraced by a brake strap y<4> the ends of which are pivoted to a lever y<1> pivoted at y<2> to the machine frame and connected by a rod y with a lever x<1> pivoted to a bracket x<3> on the machine frame and carrying a bowl x' engaging a cam x on a shaft v<2> which also carries a cam v having a flange engaging a sliding belt-shifter u for fast and loose pulleys on a shaft s geared to the heating roller c; after the yarns have been passed around the rollers &c. the desired number of times and steam supplied to the heating roller c, a hand-wheel on the shaft v<2> is rotated to move the belt t<3> from the loose to the fast pulley on the shaft s and cause the rotation of the heating roller and consequently of the other rollers-except the roller d which is driven by a belt 12 from the roller c-through the frictional contact of the yarns therewith ; simultaneously with the transfer of the belt t<3> from the loose to the fast pulley, the cam x moves the members x<1>, y and y<1> to apply the brake strap gradually to the roller h to retard its rotation and that of the rollers h<1>-h<4>; the action of the cam may be adjusted by a nut 10 on the screwed ends of the divided rod y. The yarn in passing around the roller h is engaged by polishing rollers h<1>-h<4> mounted on the ends of levers 5, 5 pivoted upon the shaft k of the roller h and driven from the roller h by gears m, ml and the levers are connected by rods 6, 6 to the arm 7 of a bell-crank lever 7 which can be moved by a hand-wheel 8 and screwed connection 8 to move the rollers h<1>-h<4> and vary the contact of the yarns with the surface of the roller h; the rollers h, h<1>-h<4> have their peripheries covered with ropes of fibrous material. The yarns are passed under the bar g to give the required contact with the sizing material on the roller d and, towards the centre of the machine, with waxing material which is contained in a middle compartment of the bath f. The guiding pins o are carried by a bar o<1> which is slowly oscillated by a link o<5>, pivoted eccentrically to a wheel o' driven by a worm o<8> from the roller p, to prevent grooving of the pins by the yarns.
