Abstract

435,704. Cleaning photographic strip film. BARBER, J. A. A., and MASTERS, A. E., 6, Park Grove, Bromley, Kent. March 26, 1934, Nos. 9370/34 and 7503/35. [Class 98 (ii)] In a machine for cleaning strip film, e.g. kinematograph film, the film is passed through a bath of film cleanser, over fixed wiping devices, and through two rotary wiping devices the first of which is positively driven at a peripheral speed which is less than that of the second. The film supply and take-up spools are constituted by flanges B<1>, C<1>, secured on spindles B, C, and the film passes from the supply spool over rollers and wipers which, with the spools, are driven by an electric motor housed in a compartment E<1>. From the supply spool the film passes over a film guide comprising a roller R against which it is pressed by a roller R<1> mounted on a spring-biassed arm R<2>, and over a second guide roller R<4> to the cleansing bath M, which is divided by a partition M<2> into compartments M<3>, M<4> and is supported on pins M<1>. Immersed in the liquid in the compartment M<3> is a preliminary wiping device comprising a guide roller N<1> and felt pads N<2>, N<3> over which passes the film F to a roller O above the level of the liquid. The second compartment M<4> contains a guide roller O<1> under the liquid and above it a movable pad P<2> and two rollers P<1>, P<5> urged together by a spring, between which the film passes to the rotary wiping devices K, K<1>, J, J<1>. These devices are drum-like brushes mounted on horizontal axes and surfaced by strips of absorbent material, e.g. cotton. The brushes K, K<1> rotating in opposite directions dry the opposite faces of the film as it passes between them, and the brushes J, J<1> geared to rotate at a higher speed polish its surfaces. The film then passes over and under drying drums L<2>, L<1>, supported on brackets L and heated by lamps L<5>, and then over a roller S and film feeding sprocket H to the jockey roller S<1> and the film takeup spool. The spools are retained on the spindles by a longitudinally split sleeve which registers with a slit on the spindle and secures the spool by frictional engagement. 435,704.
