Abstract

319,739. Spangler, L. Sept. 27, 1928, [Convention date]. Electric and magnetic.-In electricallypropelled vehicles wherein the motors are run as generators for braking, each motor or group of motors is connected in a separate circuit and the current in a pair of circuits acts oppositely on a magnet so as to effect the application of a mechanical brake to one axle or group of axles if the braking current associated with this axle or group fails or weakens. The braking current in the separate circuits of the motors 1, 2 passes through the coils 5, 6 of a magnet connected by gearing 7, 8 to a brake which is thus applied to the axle of one of the motors if the current in the circuit thereof fails or weakens. The gearing may be directly connected to the brake or it may bring into operation a source of power for applying it. Optical or acoustic indicating devices may be provided to indicate to the motorman the application of the mechanical brakes. Known arrangements in which the braking current and the supply current act oppositely upon a magnet whereby the supply current brings a mechanical brake into operation if the braking current fails are referred to.
