Abstract
319,320. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. Sept. 20, 1928, [Convention date]. Chemicals. - The known process wherein ammonia and a hydrocarbon are added to carbon tetrachloride to suppress the formation of phosgene when the carbon tetrachloride is used for extinguishing fires is modified in that aryl or alkyl phosphates, or mixtures thereof, are added in place of the hydrocarbon. Alternatively, the phosphates may be added as well as the hydrocarbon. A very small amount of ammonia may be used, or sufficient to serve as a propelling agent for the extinguishing liquid. In the former case, compressed air or nitrogen may be used as the propelling agent. Amongst examples given of suitable additions to the carbon tetrachloride are the following : ammonia and three per cent of tricresylphosphate; ammonia, two per cent of petroleum, and one per cent of tricresylphosphate.
