Abstract

319,229. General Electric Co., Ltd., and Marshall, C. H. June 14, 1928. H o i s t s with guided carriers. - A wagon-tipping cradle 3, which may be of the type described in Specification 264,613 [Class 78 (iv), Loading &c.], is suspended by ropes 20 from winding-drums 22, 23, 29, 30 on an overhead traveller 24, the drums being operated by motors 55, 68, Fig. 2, interconnected by differential gear D for hoisting and tipping the cradle. The cradle is hoisted between bell - mouthed guides 78, 79 carried by the runway and by the fixed framework 14 and swinging is checked by a weight 76 pivotally suspended from the runway by arms 77 and controlled by dashpots &c. The weight 76 is substantially equal to the weight of the cradle and empty wagon. Each rope 20 is carried round the winding-drums and led off at 74, 75 to sheaves 25-27 at the ends of the runway and around a jockey-pulley 32 supporting a balance weight 31 which remains stationary during movement of the traveller. For hoisting the cradle, the motors 55, 68 are driven in opposite directions at equal speeds, with the planet-carrier of the differential D fixed so that the two falls of each rope 20 are wound in at the same speed and the balance weights 31 are lowered. For tipping, the motors 55, 68 are driven in the same direction at equal speeds with the differential free so that one side of the cradle is raised whilst the other is lowered and the balance weights 31 remain stationary. The shafts of the motors 55, 68 are provided with brakes 54, 67. The traveller 24 is moved along the runway by a motor 38. For coaling ships by tipping the trucks within the hold, the runway is mounted on a jib 103 pivoted at 104 on a loading tower, Fig. 7, the jib being raised when required by tackle 105. The winding-drums 98 &c., are mounted on a sub-frame 100 supported from the traveller 101. The check weight 106 for preventing swinging is pivoted at a point 107 adjustable to different heights on the structure.
