Abstract

318,726. Armstrong Whitworth Aircraft, Ltd., Sir W. G., and Wylie, H. N. Aug. 10, 1928. Endless - track vehicles.-A landing- wheel for aircraft comprises a rim 3 engaged internally by rollers 6, 12 carried at the ends of a vertical frame 8, the load being carried by a slide 15 on the axle 9 which is movable diametrically of the rim 3 against spring- resistance. The helical springs 18 shown may be replaced by pneumatic or hydraulic devices. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the rollers 6 are flanged to engage tracks 4, 5 on the rim 3, plain rollers 12 being fitted at the upper corners of the frame. In a modification, the rectangular frame 8 is replaced by a telescopic tubular structure. Fig. 3 shows such a device wherein the axle 9 is carried by a boss 26 formed on a tube 19 the lower end of which is fitted with plates 20 carrying the rollers 6. The upper end of the tube 19 is guided, by a pin 22, in a sleeve 21 carrying a pair of flanged guide-rollers 12. In a further modification, the tube 19 is connected directly to a strut of the aircraft undercarriage.
