Abstract
318,302. White, A. E., (Fyr-Fyter Co.). April 5, 1928. Drawings to Specification. Chemicals.-An alkaline charge for reaction with an acid charge in an extinguisher comprises an aqueous solution of a carbonate of potassium, rubidium, or caesium, the carbonate being in such excess that a considerable quantity of free carbonate remains in solution after the reaction has occurred. Another alkali metal compound of high fire-extinguishing properties may be added to the solution, in which case the carbonate will be present, at least in sufficient quantity wholly to react with the acid. Preferably, less than ten per cent of the carbonate is used up in reaction with the acid, the solution containing from fifteen to forty-two per cent of carbonate. Preferably, also, a sulphonic acid is used as the acid charge, and to the carbonate may be added a glycol or like freezing point depressant and a substance, such as sodium dichromate, designed to prevent corrosion of the extinguisher. Anhydrous or freshly calcined carbonate is preferably used in making up the solution. The additional alkali metal compound, if used, may be an organic one, for example sodium lactate, or a halogen compound. Specification 311,063 is referred to.
