Abstract

318,194. Atlantic Coast Fisheries Co., (Assignees of Taylor, H. F.). Aug. 30, 1928, [Convention date.] Heating by electricity.-A smoke producer for use in curing meat, fish and other foodstuffs comprises means including electric heaters for decomposing a fuel such as sawdust and for feeding the fuel to and, for agitating it within the producer. The producer consists of a trough 1, preferably of aluminium, brass or other metal having a high heat conductivity, having fins 2 projecting from its outer surface to increase the heating area. Electric heaters 3 formed of quartz rods 4, Fig. 3, having a ribbon or wire resistance 5 wound thereon in series and adapted to be heated to about 1200‹ F., are disposed between the fins 2. An oscillating shaft 6 provided with deflector blades 7 pitched so as simultaneously to agitate the fuel and feed it through the trough 1 is disposed within the trough. Means 8 for supplying a predetermined quantity of fuel continuously or intermittently is disposed at one end of the trough and the residue of the fuel, which is consumed or decompased as completely as possible, leaves through a shoot 9 at the other end to a receptacle. The trough is preferably surrounded externally with asbestos fibres or other heat-retaining material 10 held in position by asbestos sheets 11 secured together by angle irons 12.
