Abstract

317,291. Newton, F. June 13, 1928. Divided on 307,523. Casings; driving-arrangements. - An electric motor for driving spinning-cans and the like has its vertical shaft carried in two journal bearings mounted beneath the rotor in a coned sleeve fitting in a coned cup in the motor casing and the casing is formed with a lateral tubular projec. tion upstanding to the height of the upper bearing, the lower part of the casing forming an oil bath. In the form shown, the yoke of the motor field magnets 1 consists of a cylinder 2 closed at its upper end by a screw cap 3 and having an upstanding conical cup 9 to receive the coned sleeve 8 in which the rotor ball or roller bearings 6, 7 are mounted. A tubular projection 10 extends upwardly to approximately the level of the bearing 6 and forms an oil inlet with a closure cap 11 and breathing space 12'. The shaft 13, which carries the can and may optionally be resilient, is connected at its lower end with the motor shaft 5 by a resilient connection formed, as described in Specification 307,523, by cutting a deep helical groove 14 in the shaft so that at high speeds it is able to set itself as required by the load. At low speeds, its deflection may be limited either by a closely fitting part of the shaft 5 or by making the cap 3 a close fit around it.
