Abstract

500,405. Centrifugal machines. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. March 14, 1938, No. 7883. Convention date, March 12, 1937. [Class 23] [Also in Group IX] A spinning spindle 15 which carries the rotor 14 of its driving motor 10 is supported in bearings 26, 27 in a housing 24 ; the housing is attached by screw bolts 25 at spaced points to a flexible annular member 53 which is attached at intermediate points by bolts 54 to a fixed housing 42. The space between the two housings contains a damping fluid. The tapered upper end of the shaft carries an .adapter 22 and a removable spinning bucket 23. The stator of the motor 10 is secured by clamps 17 in the casing 16 which is secured to the bearing housing 24 by the bolts 25, and which has an upward extension 20 to act as a shield to protect the shaft from any material spilled from the bucket. The upper bearing 26 is a ball bearing, and the lower one 27 is a sleeve bearing mounted below the lower end of a thin sleeve 31 and in a boss 32 in the housing 24. This housing serves as a reservoir for lubricant which can pass through openings 38 in the sleeve 31 ; it is then pumped between the sleeve and the tapered spindle by cavitation whenthe motor is running, to reach the bearing 26. A shield 60 is arranged above this bearing to protect the motor, and a drain plug 35 is screwed into the bottom of the housing. An overhanging flange 57 protects the flexible ring 53, and the opposed flanges 43, 44 form a seal for the space between the housings 24, 42. In this arrangement the spinning device is flexibly supported by the ring 53 and is free to oscillate to a limited extent when passing through its critical speeds. The liquid between the two housings helps to damp the oscillations.
