Abstract

316,825. Petty, A. G. Nov. 13, 1928. Cramps.-A valve spring lifter comprises a rigid U-shaped frame 1 provided on the bottom arm 2 with a forked shoe 3 to engage the valve spring washer 17, an operating lever 8 with a bifurcated head 7 embracing the end 4 of the upper arm 5 of the frame and pivoted thereto by means of inclined slots 9 engaging a pin 6 fixed to the frame end 4, a cylindrical presser member 14 adapted to engage the valve head 19 and adjustably pivoted to the lever head 7 and a spring pressed pawl 10 adapted to engage rack teeth 11 on the frame end 4 to lock the lever in the spring compressing position. The presser member 14 is slotted at 15 for the lever to work therein and is adjustably connected to the lever head 7 by means of a number of opposite pivot holes 16 adapted to take thumb-screws 13 engaging threaded bosses on the outer faces of the lever head. In a modification the sliding pivot 9 is replaced by a single pivotal connection between the operating lever and the frame end, the latter being formed with a quadrantal locking rack.
