UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WRENCH.
Application filed July 14,
The present invention has reference to a wrench of the quick acting type and which is designed for use in close quarters where an ordinary wrench cannot be employed, and our object is to simplify and improve the existing art by producing a wrench of this type which is characterized by sim licity in construction, cheapness in manufacture and thorough efficiency in practical use.
To the attainment of the foregoing the improvement resides in the construction as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a wrench in accordance with this invention, parts being in section.
Figure 2 is a view looking at right angles to Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a view of a post employed.
Figure 4; is a sectional view on the line H of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary plan view,
Figure 6 is a sectional view on the line 6-6 of Figure 5.
In carrying out our invention we make use of a flat body member 1 that merges into a jaw 2. A slidable jaw 3 is disposed opposite the jaw 1 and has its shank 4 received in a suitable opening in the body 1. The shank 4 is toothed, and journaled in the end walls provided by a suitable opening in the body 1 there is an operating screw 5 to engage with the threads 6 on the shank 4:. The outer end of the body 1 is preferably round and secured on one face of the body, adjacent to the said end, there is a socket 6. The socket has a threaded bore and screwed in this bore there is the threaded end 7 of a post 8. The post is formed with a shoulder 9 that contacts with the outer edge of the shank and a pin 10 passes through the socket and through the threaded portion 7 of the post for locking the post in the socket.
The handle of the improvementis indicated by the numeral 11. This handle has a "bifurcated end, the arms thus provided being indicated by the numerals 12 and 13, respectively. The arm 13 has a boss 14: that rests on the shoulder 9 of the post, the said 1926. Serial No. 122,422.
post passing through aligning openings in the arms 12 and 13. Arranged on the post and disposed between the arms 12 and 13 there is a notched disc 15. A pin 16 passes through the disc and. through the post, locking the disc to the post and also looking the bifurcated end of the handle on the post. Pivotally secured between the arms 12 and 13 there are spring influenced dogs 17, respectively. Revoluble on the inner rounded connecting element for the arms 12 and 13 there is a sleeve 18 having inner cam surfaces 19 to contact with the tail portions of the dogs to swing the dogs out of engagement with the notched disc 15, the sleeve being, of course, movable to bring its cams out of engagement with the dogs to permit of the active ends of the latter being brought into the notches of the disc.
The simplicity and advantages of our construction, as well as the operation thereof, will, it is believed, be fully apparent to those skilled in the art to which such invention relates so that further detailed de scription will not be required.
Having described the invention, we claim:
A wrench of the character described comprising a body portion having a stationary jaw, a slidable jaw movable on the said body portion, said body having a socket extension, a shouldered post including a threaded portion engaged in said socket, a locking pin for holding the post in the socket, a handle having a bifurcated end through which said post is passed, a ratchet wheel arranged on the post between the arms of said bifurcated portion, of the handle, spring influenced pawls pivoted in said bifurcated portion and normally engaging the said ratchet wheel, a sleeve rotatably mounted on the handle and receiving the adjacent ends of said pivoted pawls, and cam-like surfaces formed on the sleeve, and arranged to cooperate with said pawls for operating the latter against the influence of the spring.
In testimony whereof we afliX our signatures.
ALBERT ALBERTINI. ANDREW ALBERTINI.
