Carbonizing processes and apparatus.-To minimize the adhesive or sticking properties of oil shale or similar materials when carbonized. the shale is preheated to between 100‹ and 150‹ C. in an atmosphere containing 10 per cent or more of oxygen for a period of from half-an-hour to two hours. The preheating gases may be caused to pass through a deep body of the material while it is kept in a state of motion, and in the apparatus shown, the gases enter by conduits C in a rotary drum A through which the material is continuously passed from an inlet B to an outlet D. Only those conduits C which are covered with shale are supplied with the gases.
