Abstract
316,473. Mayer, F. Oct. 8, 1928. Sewing-machines, driving. -Gearing is added to the shaft of an ordinary houseold sewing machine to slowup the rate of the needle for the same movements of the treadle, to adapt the machine for embroidery. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the needle is driven in the usual way by the shaft 5, pulley 1, flywheel 3 and coupling 4. To adapt the machine for embroidery, the flywheel is disconnected from the shaft by screwing out the nut 4 and a pair of rigidly connected gear wheels 6, 7 are raised by the lever 9 to mesh with gear wheels 6<1>, 7<1>. The wheel 6<1> is rigid with the pulley and the wheel 7<1> with the shaft. The pulley therefore drives the shaft through the gear wheels at a much reduced speed for the same movements of the treadle. In the form shown in Fig. 4, the gears 6 and 7 are rotatably mounted on a pin 14 on the pulley 1. The gear 6<1> can be coupled to the pulley by a handle 12 so that the whole rotates as a unit for ordinary sewing, or it can be freed, when the shaft is rotated, after unconnecting the flywheel, at a reduced speed for embroidery by the pulleys acting as sun-andplanet gears.
