Abstract

521,063. Sewing - machines; variable - speed gearing. SINGER MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd., CORRALL H., and HEGGIE, J. Nov. 14, 1938, No. 33005. [Class 112] [Also in Group XXIV] The stitches at the beginning and end of a seam made by a piece-end sewing-machine are more closely spaced than the intermediate stitches. The variation is effected automatically, without stopping the stitching, by action upon both the means for bodily moving the machine and upon the machine feed-dog mechanism. The machine, which is a development of that described in Specification 474,261, is mounted on wheels 6 which run on rails 1 and is moved along the rails by means of a driven sprocket wheel 52 and a stationary chain 16. The wheel 52 is driven from a pulley 65 through a two - speed epicyclic gear, a shaft 56 and toothed wheels 62, 50. When the plunger 85 is moved to the right 'in Fig. 6, the speed is changed from slow to fast. This movement of the plunger is effected by the cam end of a lever 107, 10-7<SP>1</SP> which is also coupled by a rod 108 and lever 40 to a stitch regulating slide block 35. The lever 107 is moved by means of an escapement mechanism 111, 112, Fig. 5, when the shaft 114 is turned by means of a ratchet pawl 116 on a lever 115. A pin 119 on this lever is moved upwards. by a rod 121 when the latter rides up a cam surface 123, as the machine travels past it, and the lever is given its return operative stroke by a spring 131. The cam 123 is located at a suitable distance from the starting position of the machine and another is similarly located with respect to the finishing position. The epicyclic gearing comprises a fixed pinion 67, a driven pinion 91 on the shaft 56 and two pairs of planet pinions, alternatively operative, mounted upon spindles 69, 87 carried round by the driving pulley 65. The pinion 90, of the higher gear planet pair, is coupled to the pinion 88 by ratchet teeth between the end face of the pinion 90 and a disc 98 which rotates with the pinion 88. This provides a connection which can be over ridden, to keep the movement of the machine in agreement with the movement of the work under the feed-dog, when the lower gear is in operation. The latter comprises two pinions 68, 71 and these are positively connected when pins 73 carried by the pinion 71 enter holes in the pinion 68. These pins are withdrawn by an axial movement of the pinion 71 effected when the plunger 85 is moved inwards, by means of a lever 77 and a link 76 in rotary engagement with the pinion. Removing trimmings.-A blower on the carriage, driven by a belt from the driving motor, directs a blast of air through a pipe against a chute for carrying away trimmings.
