As the drive beltfidZ engages the drive" pulley .40 operation oi the machine is inauguratedythe sewing needle 5 begins its'verticalreciprocation and cooperation 'withlthe other elements of the. stitch forming mechanism, and simultaneously thetmoverjnent of the cam wheels and Mibegins! Itis'preierable, although not essential, that the stitchingoperations start from the middle of the transverse needleway-Hl proceedin thence to onelongitudinal needleway I I. In
such case, the starting point of an operative cycle of movement of the. cam wheel this lo cated midway of the ends. of one of the rack actuating cam sections of its raceyas e. g; the
sequently a series of stitches along the longitudinalmargin "of the'label L is formed, until the end of the transverse needleway I0 is reached, by which;time the rack 52 isstopped at the limit of its downward movement and there caused to dwell'as its stud roller (illenters and rides through the neutral cam race section 63. Immediately such rotative movement of the mandrel; and-work ends, the cam wheel' lli, which j revolvesincompan'y with the-cam wheel 45, hasbrought-Queer its trace cam sec on a l ;nto .en aeementrwith the studrdler of h lever 65, whereby, as said; can; section moves relative to said stud'".roller,;saidwlever 65 is causedto swing forward and back, thus axi'a lly moving themand-rell, and work clamped thereto, step 'byqstep forward and back in the directions {of the arrow a in Fig. 2 and consequently stitch- :lng, along an: end margin of the label L is formed, until the -sewing needle ,5 is returned to; the juncture of .the operative :needleway ,II and said transvei' seqneedleway. J9, by which time the leveriilifiisgstoppedin initial position and there caused to} dwell as its=;stud roller entersand rides through the neutral cam race section 74 of the cam wheel 46.: Immediately such axial movement of the mandrel ceases, the rack raise ing cam section, 62 of cam wheel-45 becomes operative, thus causing a rotativemovement of the mandrel and work in the-direction of-the arrow y in Fig. 2 with stitchgforrning efiect, until the Opposite end of the transve'rseneedleway M .is reached, by which time the rack 52 is s opped at :the limit of its upward movement and there caused to dwell as its studroller 60 enters and rides through the neutral cam race section 64.
Immediately such rotative movement of the mandrel ;and work ends, the race cam section 13, 110i cam wheel 46 becomes-operative, thus caus-j ing a second axial movement of the mandrel and work-in the directions of the arrow bin Fig. 2', with stitch forming effect along the second needlewayjrl I, and until the juncture of the latter with the-transverse needleway Hlis again aligned with the sewing needle 5, whereupon the neutral race section15 of cam whe'elrfi becomes ef-. 'fective, and the cam race section i 6! of cam:
wheel 45 again becom-es efiective to rotate the mandrelyand work back to initial starting position. 1
'It will be observed that the cam wheels 45 and it-haveftheir operative and-neutral race sections in alternated ei'r'ective relation, thus timing the operations of the sewing mechanism to stitch along one-longitudinal margin and along the end margins of the label Is. As shown ;:and
above described, the arrangement and operation is such that a double line-of stitching is produced. It will'be obvious, that variations in the relative arrangements of the operative and neutral race-sections of 'thecooperating cam wheels can be made, so .as-to begin and end the stitch ing operations at'any'desired portion of the :label ,stopping the machine upon completion of the stitching operations is as follows:
margin or'so as to produce either single, double or multiple rows of stitching, as may in any ,given case be desired. g
Theoperation of the means for automatically When the stop dog -15 isv swung backas described'to shift the drive belt 32 onto the drive pulley d0, the detent member 89 will engage and hold said stop dog '36 in such out-of service position. Asthe machine proceeds to perform its cycle of operation, the worm gear 98 willcause the worm wheel 96 to revolve in such manner and timed relation to the machineoperation that,
upon completion of the stitching, the trip stud 9Q carried by said wormwheel as will be brought ,into passing engagement with thetrip nose of trip arm 54. Such engagement will swing said trip-arm 94 so as to transmit an outward swinging movement to said detent member189 (see Fig. 9) thus. releasing ,its restraint upon the stopdog 7B. When'the'stop dog .16 isthus re- "readyifora repetition'of the above described ;0p- I support having a slotted needle-way in the 'wall- 7;. thereof, asewing mechanism includinga vertically;
' to said needleway, a sewing mechanism including ments to said work support toshift its needleway .at the same time the stop shoulder 82 'willbe V A stopped against the-side of' said stop bolt -85.
Such operation assuresa full stop ofthe driyepulley lflwithout risk of either back-lash or.;carr yv f. x over thereof under momentum, and ,consequent i ly alsoyassuring the full stopping of the sewing mechanism and work support in anaccurate nor mal initial position. The outward movement ofv the stop dog 1 16 to operative position as described, also movesoutwardly the belt shifter '64, "thus shifting the continuously running drive belt @2- onto-the loose or Iid-ler pulley i-l g j When the machine is 1 thus automatically stopped upon completion of agiyen label sewing ;-operation,-the :work and label'clamp'utt maybe released and the label frame ilfl' raised so that" 3 I the tie T may be removed from, the m'andreldft and another tie vT and label vap-plie'dto thelatter erations. I As many changes could be made in; the above widely'difierent embodiments of thisinvention I could be made without departing from the scope I thereof, as defined by the following claims, it is intended that all matter containedwin theabo ve 35 ings shall be interpreted as illustrative and (not, in 1 a limiting sense. f w
