Abstract

315,711. Gjelstad, A. July 16, 1928, [Convention date]. Projectiles; wads. - A wad for use in whaling guns or in cartridges therefor comprises a middle solid portion 1 of small diameter with two ends 2 of larger diameter to which are fitted conical rubber pieces 3 each formed with a circular groove 4 in its outer face. The tapering of the pieces 3 is such that their middle diameter is equal to the diameter of the gun barrel or cartridge, and their larger outer and resilient ends form a tight joint in the gun or cartridge. The middle portion 1, 2 may be cast in one piece from wood pulp or may be built up of thick peices of cardboard, as shown. Morever, the middle portion may be covered with a waterproofing substance. The large parts 2 may be dispensed with as well as one end piece 3. A rubber strap 5 for fastening a powder charge may be attached to an end piece 3.
