949,111. Additional propellant charges. HOTCHKISS-BRANDT. Jan. 16, 1961 [Jan. 28, 1960], No. 1697/61. Heading F3A. An additional propellant charge in the shape of a horseshoe comprises an inflammable casing which may be of celluloid reinforced by a fabric such as a ladderproof webbing of superpolyamide. The fabric may be coated with a suitable solvent and then applied to the casing, for example acetone or amyl acetate in the case of celluloid, or it may be embedded in the casing during manufacture of the latter. In one embodiment the charge is formed from two casing halves 3, 4 glued along their edges 1, 2. The half 3 has a horseshoe-shaped chamber 5 whereas the half 4 is flat apart from a stiffening rib 14 and a centrally raised portion 7, the latter having a filling aperture 12 and closure member 13. The charges are primarily intended for use with fin-stabilized projectiles and fit on a cylindrical portion of the tail unit in such a manner that the portion 7 of one charge lies between the arms of the horseshoe of the adjacent charge thereby, in effect, completely surrounding the cylindrical portion with propellant.
