Abstract

315,663. Ardenne, M. von. July 14, 1928, [Convention date]. Thermionic amplifiers.-To increase the selectivity of a tuned input circuit (such as a frame aerial) connected to an aperiodic amplifier, the damping effect of the apparent grid resistance of the first valve (due to reflex action from its plate circuit) is minimized by inserting a large series resistance Rg, Fig. 2, or a small series condenser C, Fig. 3, between the input circuit and the grid. By this means the apparent resistance R1 which is represented in dotted lines on Figs. 2 and 3 carries only a small fraction of the aerial current and consequently has a minimum damping effect. The cascade of resistance-coupled amplifiers is designed to have low amplification for disturbing low-frequency currents, such as may be picked up by the aerial or fed to the valves with the supply current. When a condenser C is employed its capacity is of the same order as the grid capacity of the first valve, and grid bias is applied through a grid leak R2.
