Abstract

477,240. Valve amplifying circuits. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Feb. 19, 1937, No. 5031. Convention date, May 16, 1936. [Class 40 (v)] To reduce parasitic noise in amplifiers for very weak currents, such as television amplifiers, the resistance in the circuit of the photoelectric cell is chosen of extremely high value, and the consequent reduction in amplification of the high-frequency signal components is compensated by the provision of a negative feed-back circuit. In the Figure, the series resistance Rg for the photo-cell CP is made large, e.g. 10 to 100 megohms, and in consequence the high-frequency signal components would be reduced by the parasitic capacity C. This is prevented by inserting a feed-back resistance Rf between the anode and grid of the valve TV1, the product of Rf and the anode-grid capacity Cag being equal to the product of Rg and C. The anode resistance Ra is also large and the frequency-discriminating effect of its parasitic shunt capacity Ca is overcome by inserting in the coupling to the next valve TV2 a resistance-capacity unit Rc, Cc of the same time constant. The valve grids are biassed to prevent grid current from flowing. When a wide band of frequencies is comprised in the signal, the lowest frequencies may be suppressed or separately handled. Specification 436,734 is referred to.
