Abstract
315,080. Nachen, W. June 19, 1928. Drawing wire.-A continuous wire drawing machine has the various drawing-drums driven through clutches which are interconnected so that the actuation of any one clutch actuates in a similar manner the clutches of all the preceding drums but leaves the clutches of subsequent drums unaffected. A new length of wire may thus be threaded on the initial dies of the series while the trailing end of the preceding length of wire is being drawn through the later dies of the series. A series of drums 5 - - 8, Fig. 1, arranged vertically or on inclined axes draws wire through dies 1 - - 4 the wire being guided between the dies by guide rollers 9 - - 11 and 90, the lower guide rollers being immersed in a lubricating tank 12. Each drum is formed at its lower ends with a cone ring 23, Fig. 4 adapted to engage with a similar ring 24 constantly driven through bevel-gearing by a longitudinal shaft 25. The spindle 22 of each drum is lifted to disengage the drum by a rod 21 linked to a treadle 14a, spring-held at 91 and adapted to wipe past a pivoted weighted pawl 20a mounted on a bar 19<a> so that the treadle is automatically locked in the disengaged position. On restarting the drum, the pawl is first tripped through actuation of the bar 19<a> by a treadles 30<a> after which both treadles 14a, 30<a> may be allowed to rise together. Each treadle 14<c> -- 17a, Fig. 3, is provided with a projection at the left hand end for actuating- all the treadle on its left hand side. For heavy duty machines power driven gear controlled by the treadles may be used for engaging or disengaging the drawing drums. Such a gear may comprise a constantly reciprocated shaft 40, Fig. 8, carrying forked sleeves 41b which may be angularly moved by the treadle 14b so that the arm 52b engages a lug on a carn sliding on a shaft 36 thereby actuating a roller 40a on the drum-lifting bar 21a. The sliding cams are of such a length that the actuation of any one cam moves all preceding cams which have not been previously similarly actuated. The clutches may be electromagnetically actuated.
