Abstract

A machine for treating hoods and other articles with liquid comprises a tank 23, Fig. 2, for containing liquid, a pair of spring urged constantly rotating squeezing-rollers 20, 26, Figs. 1 and 2, movable in inclined guides 29 above the tank, and pedal actuated clutch-controlled mechanism for moving the roller 26 to and from the roller 20. This mechanism comprises a pair of toothed segments 32, Fig. 2, one of which is operatively connected to the movable roller 26 and the other is rocked by levers controlled by a pedal 78. The pedal 78 effects the connection of a clutch member 71 mounted on a rotatable shaft 22 with a clutch <PICT:0412197/IV/1> member 72 operatively connected with a crank disc 93 the crank 82 of which disc draws down a rod 86 working in a sleeve 87 connected by a lever 88 with one of the toothed segments 32 to move the squeezing roller 26. A handle 94 provided with a pin 95 to engage the teeth of a rack 96, is adapted by means of a cable 97 to prevent the return movement of the lever 88 so as to maintain the rollers 20, 26, in their squeezing position. The fixed roller 20 is rotated from a main driving shaft 12 and continuous rotation is imparted to the movable roller 26 by means of spur gearing on the roller shafts in mesh with spur gearing carried in a frame suspended on springs, the frame being adapted to rock so as to maintain the spur gears in engagement in all positions of the movable roller 26. In operation, the article is dipped into a tank 23 and passed by hand between guard plates 101, 102, Fig. 4, to the squeezing rollers 20, 26. When the pedal 78 is depressed, the clutch members 71, 72 are engaged and the crank disc 93 rotated one revolution to advance and withdraw the movable roller 26. If, after half a revolution of the crank disc 93, the handle 94 is pulled, then the clutch members 71, 72 are disengaged and the crank disc 93 remains in a neutral position with the rollers 20, 26 pressing on the article. When the handle 94 is released, the clutch members are re-engaged and the crank disc 93 performs the other half of its revolution to withdraw the movable roller 26, the rollers 20, 26, having previously forced the article between <PICT:0412197/IV/2> <PICT:0412197/IV/3> guard plates 107, 114, so that it can be lifted from the machine.
