Abstract

253,855. Spirella Co. of Great Britain, Ltd., (Assignees of Bowler, W. E.) June 17, 1925, [Convention date]. Operating clutches; reversing-gearing. - A machine for making wire fabrics formed of oppositely-disposed overlapping loops for corset stays consists of a mechanism for bending the wire to form a fabric, mechanism for straightening and battening the fabric, mechanism for severing the fabric into lengths, and driving mechanism to actuate all of these mechanisms simultaneously, synchronously, and automatically. Bending mechanism A is driven from pulleys on a shaft 25 which is geared to the shafts carrying the rolls for discharging the fabric 31. The intermediate shaft 27 carries also a bevel gear 28 connected by a gear 29 to a longitudinal shaft 30, which has worms 37, 65, 74, 99 gearing with worm wheels for driving feed rolls 33, 34 for pulling the fabric through the tensioning mechanism B, feed rolls 63, 64 for pulling it through the flattening mechanism C, feed rolls 72, 73 for pulling it through the untwisting mechanism D, and feed rolls 97, 98 for pulling it through edgewise straightening mechanism E and for feeding it to the severing mechanism F. The fabric is severed into lengths by a tool carried by a rocking lever 104 which is operated by an eccentric on a shaft 109 geared to the shaft 30 through a one-revolution clutch 113, Fig. 16. The shaft 109 is brought to rest in the proper position by an adjustable yielding brake plate 120 engaging a cam disc 121 on one end of the shaft and by a spring-pressed pitman-rod 125 mounted on a crank-pin 126 on a disc 115 on the other end of the shaft. The clutch is closed by a spring 114 and is opened by a wedge-shaped member 172 on a spring-pressed rod 174, which engages a nib 170 on a forked lever 119. The closing of the clutch is controlled by a second member 185 carried by a spring-pressed rod 188 and guided on the member 172 by a slot 186 and pin 187. The member 185 engages a finger 171 on the lever 119 and is withdrawn therpefrom subsequently to the withdrawal of the member 172. The rods 174, 188 are actuated by a block 156, Fig. 17, which is traversed by a screw 130 rotated through reversing gears 137, 138 and 139, 140, 141 from a shaft 136 driven by spiral and bevel gear from the shaft 30. The reversing is effected by a clutch 142 operated by a lever 144 bifurcated at its lower end and containing slots 147 in which move rollers 148 carried by a spring-controlled rod 150 passing through an oscillatable collar 151. At opposite ends of the traverse of the block it respectively engages stops 161, 162 on a rod 158 carrying arms 164, 165 provided with push-rods 166, 167, which engage the rollers 148 to push the rod 150 over the dead centre and thus reverse the lever 144. The block has threaded sleeves 160 to adjust the time of operation of the clutch 142. The stop 162 is adjustable on the rod 158 so as to vary the lengths of severed fabric. When the block 156 moves to the right, Figs. 17 and 21, a spring-pressed dog 176 carried thereby towards the end of its movement engages a projection 178 on the rod 174 to withdraw the rod from the lever 119 and shortly afterwards the block engages a collar on the rod 188 so as to remove the member 185 and allow the clutch 113 to close. Further movement of the block 156 causes the lever 181 carried thereby to engage under a stationary roller 180 so as to withdraw the dog 176 and allow the spring 173 to push forward the rod 174 to disengage the clutch 113. Reversal of the rotation of the screw 130 then occurs and the rod 188 moves back with the block under pressure of its spring so as to reengage the finger 171.
