Abstract

314,574. Ward, W. F. Hoare-, and McKellen, S. D. March 30, 1928. Electric and magnetic. -A magnetic or electromagnetic governor or brake for a spring or electric motor comprises a bar magnet 1 which lies across an aluminium or copper disc rotating with the motor and which is pivoted so that it may lie radially or tangentially of the disc. It is normally held in an intermediate position by a hair-spring 4 or weight 6, or both. The magnet automatically adjusts itself to a position to increase or decrease its braking moment by the increased or decreased drag produced by the disc. The disc is thicker at the circumference than at the centre to increase its momentum and the eddy-current effects. In the arrangement, Fig. 3, the magnet is of U-shape, leg A acting as in Fig. 1, while leg B operates in nearer proximity to the disc's periphery; or the leg B may be a counterweight. The magnet may have a sliding movement instead of an oscillating one. In a modification, the magnet is mounted to oscillate in a support which is movable radially, whereby adjustment of speed is effected. The position of the sliding bearing may be varied gradually by connecting it to the motor, tone-arm &c. In a further modification, the magnet is pivoted to the end of a pivoted arm.
