Coating compositions and processes.-In the process of the parent Specification for preparing surfaces for the reception of cellulose lacquers which consists in applying an intermediate coating comprising a solution of a protein body, resin and a softening agent, a hardening agent is added to the solution, or the intermediate coating is treated with a hardening agent. Suitable hardening agents are chrome-alum, aqueous formaldehyde solution or formaldehyde vapour.
