Abstract

313,417. Eyston, G. E. T. Jan. 9, 1928. Fixed - abutment type.- Superchargers for internal combustion engines having valved or other parts for varying the degree of supercharging are constructed so that no increase or fluctuation of pressure occurs in the superchargers when the parts are adjusted to prevent supercharging. A rotary pump having sliding rocking vanes e delivers compressed air when supercharging across a port m into a cavity p. When no supercharging is desired valves s, w are opened, the former acting to enlarge the delivery port m by the addition of the port n and the latter serving to short-circuit the whole pump. The vanes are spaced so that when the port n is opened by means of the valves s the spaces between the vanes are never isolated. The valves s, w may be operated by a relay under barometric control. A spring y normally keeps the valves s, w open. When with decreasing atmospheric pressure a barometric device 4 makes contact with a rheostat 3 a solenoid 2 acts in opposition to the spring and the valves are shut more and more as the resistance at 3 is cut out. A similar control may be exerted by the throttle the movement of which may be arranged to cut out resistance at 2, 2. The valves s, w may be operated independently, the valve s being opened first. In another form of blower, the rotor which has radially sliding vanes is moved into a central position within the casing when supercharging is not desired. The Provisional Specification describes also the use of a centrifugal blower, having diffusion blades which may be adjusted to prevent compression.
