Differential gearing ; universal joints. - In ball joints which transmit power, the ball such as 8, Fig. 1, or 11, Fig. 2, is cut right through from its outer end by a slot 10 in order to obtain a resilient effect. In Fig. 1 is shown a vehicle differential gear comprising two ball joints between the side gears 6 and the part axles 12<1>. There are pin-and-slot driving connections 7, 9, which allow the axles to rock. Each of the balls 8 is cut nearly into separate halves by a slot 10, which extends from the outer end of the ball in a plane containing the centre of rotation. In Fig. 2 is shown a universal joint with main or central ball 11 with the through cross slot 10 as described. Balls 13 recessed into the main ball 11 engage cylindrical grooves 17 in which they reciprocate when shafts 12, 14 are not in line. There is a thrust spring 18 and leather guard 19.
