Abstract

312,169. Jost, F. May 21, 1928, [Convention date]. Addition to 306,046. Manures.-the treatment of calcium phosphate with nitric acid and of the solution so obtained with alkali chloride described in the parent Specification is modified to obtain mixed fertilizers by distilling a mixture of the phosphate, an alkali chloride or chlorides, and nitric acid. Vapours of hydrochloric and nitric acid evolved are absorbed in alkali, for instance by ammonia, milk of lime. or soda lye, to produce a strewable non- hygroscopic fertilizer. The residue consists mainly of alkali nitrate and calcium phosphate, with a little sodium chloride, which' forms a valuable mixed fertilizer. If the distillation is interrupted so that an acid residue is obtained, this may be neutralized with ammonia. Distillation may be effected under reduced pressure; or in a current of air to prevent loss of nitric acid ; and tri-calcium phosphate separating out during the distillation may be separately removed. The process may be interrupted before distillation is complete, the solid residues being used in a fresh distillation. Excess of sodium chloride and calcium phosphate with respect to the nitric acid may be used.
