Abstract

310,782. Heard, F. G. Jan. 30, 1928. Centreless grinding ; gauges; guides and rests. -A machine for grinding the external surface of cylindrical work, or of tubular work concentrically with the bore, consists of a control wheel 3 carried by a head 1 pivoted at 2 on a base 4 and pressed towards the work by a spring 6, and a grinding-wheel 15 carried by a head 8 pivoted to the base at 9 and having a downwardly extending weighted arm 11. The work, or a mandrel carrying it, is supported between the wheels 3, 15 by a rest 13 having a notch 14 shaped to prevent lifting of the work by the wheel 3. Pivoted at 17 on the base is a handlever 16 having an arm 19 connected by a link 20 to one arm of a T-lever 21 pivoted at 22, a second arm of the lever 21 being pivoted to a rod 23 secured to a lug 24 on the head 8 and serving, on depression of the lever 16, to move the grinding-wheel up to the work to an extent limited by a screw 25 and a stop 26. The third arm of the lever 21 has pivoted thereto a link 28 carrying dogs 30, 33, which engage a lug 24<a> on the head 1, the dog 33 serving to lock the heads 1, 8 together, so that the work is ground to size. In a modification, the work-rest is pivotally mounted, and is movable about its pivot to an extent limited by two stops.
