Abstract

366,466. Centreless grinding. CHURCHILL MACHINE TOOL CO., Ltd., Broadheath, near Manchester, and ASBRIDGE, H. H., Claremont, Washway Road, Ashton-on-Mersey. Oct. 2, 1930, No. 29480. [Class 60.] Guides and rests; gauges.-In a centreless grinding-machine the work is carried solely by an arbor supported between the peripheries of a grinding-wheel and a regulating-wheel. As applied to grinding a cylindrical portion on an article concentric with a portion of different diameter, the machine consists of a bed b upon which is mounted a grinding-wheel a and a slide e which may be locked by a screw k. Upon the slide e is a slide d carrying a regulating- wheel c and adapted to be locked to the slide e by a screw l, the slides being movable together, or the slide d alone being movable, by a screw m operable by a handle m<1>. The slides also are moved during grinding, after locking the screw l by a screw r, by a handle n connected to a nut rotatable in the slide d, stops o, p being provided to limit the movement of the handle n. The work is supported by a socket type of arbor s, which has a bore receiving as a running fit a machined part u<1> of the work, and is carried by a bracket f, pivoted at g to the slide e and having thereon adjustable stops h, i, of which the stop h determines the size of the work, and the stop i limits the movement of the work towards the regulating- wheel ; a spring j or a weight urges the work towards the regulating-wheel. On the support f is mounted an adjustable stop 10 which contacts with the regulating-wheel slide at 13 when the stop h, Fig. 1, is in action, this serving to prevent twisting strain on the work. In a modification, the regulating-wheel axis may be stationary and the grinding-wheel fed up to the work. The work-support may be fitted to an existing machine as an attachment thereto. Specifications 360,964 and 366,467 are referred to.
