This invention relates to grinding machines and more particularly to an attachment for such machines adapted to support rocker arms to be ground and tools for dressing the grind Wheel of the machine.
The primary object of the invention is to provide an attachment of the character indicated above adapted to be adjustably and removably mounted on ,an arbor secured to the grinding machine adjacent to the shaft of the grinding Wheel and extending parallel to said shaft.
Another object of the. invention is to provide an attachment of the character indicated above comprising a rocking arm supporting post mounted on a base plate which in turn is adjustably and yieldably secured to a sleeve bracket mounted on the arbor.
A further object of the invention is to provide an attachment of the character indicated above the sleeve bracket of which is equipped with a hollow portion adapted to receive and adjust ably support a holder for a threaded dressing tool for grinding wheels.
Anadditional objectof the invention is to provide an attachment of the character indicated above the toolholder of which is adaptedto hold the dressing tool selectively in working or in storage position. j
The invention consists in the details of constructionand in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved grinding machine, whereby certain advantages are attained, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order that my invention may be better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Figure 4 is a view in section taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 3;
Figure 51s a detail view of a rocker arm supporting post mounted on a base plate shown partly in elevation andpartly in section;
Figure 6' is a detail view in top plan of the bracket and its supporting arm for holding a dressing tool in working position relatively to the abrading wheel of the grindingmachine; and
Figure 7 is an end view in elevation of Figure 6, showing the dressing tool disposed in various positions of use.
The rocker arm and dressing tool holder as herein embodied comprises a bracket It! having a sleeve-likebody ll slidably mounted on an arm I Zsecured in any suitable manner on the body B of .a grinding machine and disposed parallel to the shaft I3 of the grind wheel 14. On the arm 12 an annular flange I5 is formed or mounted adjacent to the grinding wheel B and a helical spring is surrounds the arm l2 between the annularilange I5 and the end surface ofthe bracket body H. A boss I! is formed on the outer side'of :the bracket body H adjacent its inner end to receive a wing bolt I 8 for securement of the bracket I U in adjusted position on the arm I2.
Adjacent the outer end of the bracket body II is a hollow member l9 secured to said body on the opposite side from the boss I! and so that the axis of the bore 20 of the hollow member l9is disposed at right angles to the axis of the body I l. A boss 2| is formed on the member l9 and has a wing bolt 22 threaded therein.
A rectangularboss 23, constituting a platform,
is formed on the upper side'of the body l0 and an opening 24 is provided in the body II] on that side in which-the boss I! is located and it extends nearly over the entire side of the platform 23. A wing '25 extends at an obtuse angle 'from the body ID at each end of the opening and the upper edge surfaces of said wings are disposed in the same plane with the surface of the platform 23.
A base plate 26 has a substantially rectangular portion 21 from one end of which a narrowed- .downhandle portion 28 extends.
A stud 29 is secured in the approximatecenter of the platform 23 and extends through the base plate '26 on the longitudinal center line of said plate and adjacent to the end edge of the rectangular portion 21 thereof remote from the handle portion 28. The stud 29 extends also through a normally arcuate spring plate 30 extending transversely over the rectangular base plate portion 21 and a nut 3| on the stud 28 urges the spring plate 3!) down and flattens it into engagement with the base plate 26 so that the-latter is prevented from swinging freely about the stud '29 but can be pivoted about the same by means of the handle portion 28; angled edge fingers 30' (Figures 1 and 6) on the spring plate 30 engage the adjacent edge of the base plate 26 to prevent turning of the spring relative thereto.
A central longitudinal slot 32 is provided in the rectangular base plate portion 26 anda post P for supporting a rocker arm R is adjustably mounted on the base plate 26. The postP comprises a tubular socket member 33 having an annular flange 34 intermediate its ends. The lower end portion of the socket member 33 extends slidably through the slot 32 and the flange 34 rests on the base plate 26. A helical spring 35 surrounds the socket member 33 underneath the base plate 26 and a nut 36 is mounted on the lower end portion of the socket 33. An upright 31 has a substantially cylindrical lower portion 38 fitting slidably into the socket 33. Adjacent to the upper end of the upright portion 38 a flang 39 is formed resting on the upper end of the socket 33 when the upright is in working position. The nut 36 engages the spring 35 and exerts a downward pull on the socket 33 securing the post P in adjusted position in relation to the base plate 26. The lower end of the upright 31 has a slot 31' in which engages a split spring washer 31a which looks the nut 36.
The intermediate portion 40 of the upright 31 is of smaller diameter than the flange and a conical clamping member 4| provided with an axial bore 42 fits slidably on the intermediate portion 40 of the upright 31 and'rests with its base on the flange 39.
A second conical clamping member 43-is provided with an axial bore 44 and fits slidabl on the intermediate upright portion 43. It is mounted on said portion upside down, so that the smaller end portions of the two conical clamping members 4| and 43 are adapted to enter the bore 45 of the rocker arm R from top and bottom as best shown in Figure 5.
The upper end portion 46 of the upright 31 is divided into a plurality of annular flanges 48 spaced from each other by annular grooves 49. The top-edge of each flange 48 is beveled at an angle of forty-five degrees, as at c A helical spring 5| surrounds loosely the upper upright portion46 and rests on the clamping member 43. A clamp adjuster 52 comprises a hollow ring 54 having a sleeve 53 depending from and opening through its bottom wall 54. The sleeve 53 fits slidably over the flange 4'8 and loosely into the spring 5| which bears against the bottom wall 54' of the ring 54 to urge the clamp adjuster 52 upwardly. 1
A rectangular slot 55 is provided in the ring wall 54 and in the insidesurface thereof a recess 56 is formed. A pivot pin 51 is secured in the bottom wall 54 and extends into the recess 56. A lock lever 58 is pivotally mounted on the'pivot pin 5! and extends with" its free end through the slot 55. Outside of the ring 54 the lock lever 58 is bent upwardly to form a finger grip 5E3. 'A pin 60 is set into the lock lever 58 adjacent to the ring wall 54 remote from the pivot pin 51. One end portion of'a helical spring 6| is secured to the pin 60 and the other spring end is attached to a pin 62 set into the bottom wall 54 so-that the spring 6| urges the lock lever 58 toward the upright portion 46 under one of the flanges 48 so that accidental upward movement of the clamp adjuster 52 and consequent release of the spring 5| is prevented. The edge of the lock lever 53 engaging the upright is provided with a curved cut-out 63 to fit onto the upright and the edge of the cut-out 63 is beveled at an angle of forty-five degrees at '64 so that the clamp ad juster can be slid easily downward over the flanges 48 but cannot slide accidently in upward direction. In this manner rocker arms R of various widths may be clamped in position between the clamping members for grinding on the grind wheel I4.
When it becomes necessary to dress or tru the grind wheel M a tool holder '65 is attached to the bracket l0 and it comprises a substantially cylindrical stem 66 fitting slidably into the bore 20 of the hollow member IS. The wing bolt 22 secures the tool holder 65 in adjusted position. On the outer end of the stem 66 a, tapped head 61 is formed frOm the tapped bore 68 of which a saw slot 68' extends into the stem 66.
Abolt r69 equipped 'at its end with diamonds fits threadedly into the tapped bore 68 and is adapted to be disposed in' working contact with the grind wheel M by adjusting the bracket ID on the arm l2 as described above and by adjusting the stem 66 in the tubular member I9 and the bolt 69 in the stem head 61.
When the dressing tool is not to be used the tool holder 65 may be secured to the bracket ID by inserting the stem 66 into the holder member l9 from the side remote to the grinding wheel as shown in broken lines in Figure 7.
To prevent the bracket ID from sliding ofi the arm |2 a stop ring 10 is mounted on said arm outside of the bracket and is secured in position by a set screw H or the like.
When a rocker arm R. is to be ground the clamp adjuster 52 is removed from the upright 31 by working the lock lever 58 out of engagement with the flanges 48. The spring 5| and the upper conical clamping member 43 is removed from the upright 31. The rocker arm R is mounted on the post P so that the smaller end portion of the clamp member 4| enters the bor 45 of the rocker arm R. Then the upper clamping member 43 and the spring'5l is mounted again on the post P and the clamp adjuster 52 is pressed down onto the post P so that the lock lever 58 slides over the flanges 48 compressing the spring 5| which in turn urges the upper clamping member into the bore 45 of the rocker arm R holding the latter pivotally in position to be urged against the grind wheel l4. With power applied to the grinding wheel l4, and a rocker arm- R mounted on the holder, as before stated, with its impaired end disposed incontact with the adjacent side of the grinding wheel l4, and it is thereafter rocked to and fro, by a manipulation of thehandle 28, to impart a rolling movement to that end to assure of the uniform dressing of its entire peripheral or working'surface.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a grind machine constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly wall adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated.
I claim:
1. In combination, a grinding machine including its frame and a rotatable abrasive wheel and a valve rocker arm holder attachment, said holder comprising an arm extending from said frame adjacent to and to one side of the lower portion of said wheel, a bracket mounted for angular adjustment on said arm, a vertical stud carried by said bracket, a horizontal base plate extending laterally from said bracket and secured at one end on said stud, a post extending vertically through said base plate, an annular element mounted on the upper end of said post, a pair of clamp members movably supported on said post between said base plate and the annular element, a coil spring on said post between the lower side of said base plate and a nut on the lower end of the post, a second coil spring on said post between the upper or said clamp members and said annular element, said second spring acting to urge said clamp members into engagement with the pivot opening in the said rocker arm when the latter is positioned on said 5 post between the clamp members, a reduced portion at the outer end of said base plate and constituting a handle, for adjusting the same and said bracket angularly with respect to said arm and means securing said bracket on the said arm in the positions of adjustment of the same and said base plate.
2. The combination as defined in claim 1, with said arm circular in cross-section, a coil spring on said arm in interposed relation with respect to the said frame and the inner end of said bracket, and the said securing means comprised in a winged screw carried by said bracket to secure the same in adjusted position on the arm, and an annular stop element on the outer end of said arm to prevent total displacement of the bracket from the arm by said spring, whenever said screw is loosened to allow adjustment of the bracket.
