Vacuum tubes; ,lowpressure metallic-vapour apparatus.-Destruction of the cathode of the parent Specification due to fusion arising from local heating is avoided by forming the filament with a core of high refractory material, such as molybdenum or tungsten, and covering this with a metal of the iron group, for example nickel or iron, to which an emissive coating is applied. The nickel &c. 13, 14, Figs. 2 and 3, is applied to a slug 11, 12 of the refractory metal which is then swaged to reduce the diameter and consolidate the core and shell. Fig. 1 shows a rectifier containing argon or mercury vapour and having a cathode 2 which is constructed according to the invention and supported by conductors 3, 4, anodes 5, 6 being carried by conductors 7, 8; the conductors are connected to plugs 9 and a base 10.
